EDENT1FI and EUDF in the European Parliament

On December 12th, 2024, EDENT1FI and European Diabetes Forum (EUDF) joined forces in the ‘European Alliance to Overcome Diabetes’. It was a pleasure to bring Type 1 Diabetes to the European Parliament and to discuss the importance of early detection of T1D.

We learned from Italian experts and the vice-president of the Italian Chamber of Deputies how the Italian law on pediatric screening triggered multiple actions and pilot screenings in Italy.

Europe should seize the momentum that was created in Italy. Experts from EDENT1FI, Breakthrough T1D and Sanofi discussed the need for European coordination and collaboration to pave the way for T1D screening. Finally, Jurgen Vercauteren, project leader of EDENT1FI and member of the Patient Advisory Committee, gave a personal testimony on the importance of screening and closed the session with a call to action.

The first 25,000 screenings and all countries are on track!

Looking back on the first year of EDENT1FI, we already screened 25,000 children! During our 5-year project, we aim to assess 200,000 children across Europe and detect whether they have early stage type 1 diabetes, based on the presence of autoantibodies in their blood. To start-up universal screening in different countries, screening sites had to comply to specific regulations. Now, all screening sites are fully on track. Currently, we screened 25,012 children across 8 sites in Germany, Denmark/Sweden, United Kingdom, Italy, Czechia, Poland and Portugal. Recruitment of children happened in different ways, e.g. via pediatric general practitioners or through contacts with schools and sport events. Let’s keep up the good work! IDS 2024 debate: To screen or not to screen?

The 20th edition of the Immunology of Diabetes Society (IDS) congress took place in Bruges (Belgium) from 4 to 8 November. A major debate on screening children for auto-antibodies (AAb) associated with T1D, underscored the importance of the EDENT1FI project. Screening for T1D biomarkers is a hot topic due to the emergence of the drug teplizumab (approved in the USA), which is able to delay transition from presymptomatic to symptomatic T1D by several years. However, screening for early stages of T1D in the general population raises several questions, where EDENT1FI aims to step in: how do we establish a universal screening strategy, which tests should be used, how should we follow-up someone who tests positive, can we offer treatment, what is the psychological and economic impact, etc.? Read more on the discussion points of the debate.

Type 1 Diabetes can be fast, but we can be faster!

The EU Early Detection Policy Forum is calling for immediate, unified action to enhance early detection of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) across Europe. Emphasizing the critical need for cohesive EU-wide strategies, the Forum advocates for policies that prioritize early T1D diagnosis and access to timely, life-saving treatments. Key policy recommendations include increasing public awareness about the importance of early diagnosis and ensuring that individuals at risk or diagnosed with T1D have access to advanced, innovative therapies.
